Our creative media assignment this term was to create an animation and I feel I completed this successfully. As this was our second creative media task for the year and therefore our second experience of keeping a creative media documentarily journal, I felt more prepared. This time I decided to keep a blog instead of a paper journal. I found this worked better for me and I will keep a blog apposed to a paper journal next term because it can always be accessed. As long as you have a computer, you can’t forget it. It is easy to misplace or forget a paper journal but it is almost impossible to lose blog. This makes me much more comfortable.

I am extremely happy with my final result and I think I have done well this term. I found animationish and animation much harder than photoshop. Through this process, I have become much more comfortable using a blog and animationish. At the beginning of the unit, I expected animation to be much more complicated than it was. It is still very hard, but there are4 not as many tools and the process isn’t as complicated as it was for photoshop in my opinion.

I have learnt how to use animationish and feel comfortable using it in future. I learnt how to duplicate frames and change them, use the truck tool and key frames as well as learning about how to use the bamboo tablets. I haven’t really learnt any tricks, but I have learnt how to operate the program successfully.

The development and planning of my character helped me when writing my personality profiles. Little things, such as how he has a limp and walks oddly have been included to add credit. My inspiration didn’t help me very much as what I decided to do changed dramatically throughout the assignment.

For the last assignment, I received straight A’s. I was very nervous going into this as I would really like to maintain this average and as my animation will suffer from my lack of drawing skills, I knew this meant I had to work really hard on my blog, ensuring it is maintained and accurate.

I didn’t have any problems that I couldn’t work through and I am happy with my finished animation and I think I have produced the best work possible. Next time, when Miranda and I team up to create and i-stop motion piece, I am going to be much better at the time line prediction. I think I bit off more than I could chew with this assignment, although I think I dealt with this well.

I am convinced that this movie, named ‘BOBS BIG DAY’ would be a great idea for a children’s film. Although this is simply a thirty second trailer, I am convinced that Pixur will love this animation as much as I do. This film is ideal for young children as it is a fun idea. Bob is easy to relate to and is just your typical guy. Children around the world will love this film as it’s just a great movie with a great vibe.

At the beginning of the term when I started my animation, I over estimated the amoount I would be able to complete as I had no expereince with the program and animation. As I progressed, I realised that my original story board actually becoming a finished animation was slim to none. I failed to complete what my story board had planned out as I just didn't have enough time. I am happy with what I completed but I didn't get to complete what I originally set for myself on my storyboard.

Combinding backgrounds

Throught the proccess of animation, I came to a dilema. I decided I wanted to include grass and a post from the internet. I discovered that I needed to incorporate the two as I was only able to include one. Luckily, my photoshop skills from last term came in handy and enabled me to complete this task effectively so I wasted minimal time away from my animation.

Animationish to Quicktime

When working on an animation in animationish style, it is always saved as an animationish file. However, when uploading images to a blog or the dropbox, the type of file is not appropriate. The animation must be transfered to a quicktime file which is also known as a movie file. To do this, when the animation is open, simply click share which is on the top left next to the save button. You then select quicktime from the menu which appears. This means your file is ready to be played and shared!

Layers of animation - Foreground & Background

The layers of animationish are much simpler and extremely different when compared to that of photoshop. There are only two layers, the foreground and the background. The background is used to have just what the name suggests, background. Backgrounds don't move and travel around. The foreground, on the other hand is all action. The foreground is where the characters and/or objects move around. Whenever my Piffle or Bob is moving, I transfer them to the foreground. In my animation, the table, grass and sign are always in the background while the other two rotate. I only ever have one object in the foreground at a time or I find that I have difficulty moving them around.

Bob walks across the screen, then stops when he sees the post. He sees that there is a competition running.

BOB: Wow, a competition today! I really want to win the Puffle prize!

When Bob reaches the prize table, the puffle called Piffle jumps off the table and onto the ground near Bob’s feet. Bob dances around and accidently trends on Piffle’s feet.

PIFFLE: Argggg! You stepped on my foot!

BOB: Oh, sorry little guy!

PIFFLE: AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGG

Piffle transforms from a cute and cuddly little Puffle into a vicious monster! Bob runs of screen

BOB: Arr! Run away, run away, run away, runaway! He’s trying to eat me! Run away.

I am voicing Bob and Miranda is voicing Piffle for me. I have decided to give Piffle and Bob different voices as the two characters are extremely different.

Animation Styles - MANGA

Manga is an extremly popular form of animation. Manga is actually a form of Japanese comic, but in Western countries it is refered to as simply an asian style of drawing and animation. While each artist has his or her own style, there are a few things that give Manga a distinctive look. Drawings are typically done in pen and ink, with an emphasis on clean lines. It is very similar to Japanese animae and many peple confuse the two although they are different. Some Manga series are adapted into popular televison shows and movies.

Truck tool

THe truck tool is a tool which is used in conjunction with the key frame tool. IT is not actually called the truck tool but this is what I refer to it as because I do not know its real name. When the truck tool is activated, the moving history of an object is shown. THis means that you can made your object move evenly across the screen and see how much it is moving per frame.

Difficulties

One of the difficulties I had was getting my two character to move at once. When I out both of them it was a disaster and they did not move in relation to what I was doing but in relation to each other. I solved ythis problem by putting one in the background and one in the foreground. This fixed the problem but made is hard when changing which character was moving. I have to change Piffle and Bob from the background to the foreground, which ever is in the foreground moving and which ever is not in the background. THis is frustrating because it means it takes a much longer time to move and do anything to my animation.

Pinoccio is one of the alltime favourite childrens walt disney characters. This friendly puppet is in the hearts of maby young boys and girls all around the world. He is a greqt example of an animation because the way he was created and represented through animation made it realistic- you ciuld believe from the way he moved that he was in fact a wooden puppet.

This is Cinderella, one the most most recognised and oldest characters of all time. Cinderella was one of the first walt disney movies. She didn't really inspire me but I think she is really awesome and I wanted to include her as an example.

This is Lisa Simpson, a very well known character from the TV show called 'The Simpsons' which is the longest consecutive running Television show in history. She is an example of an animation. She is a cartoon style, which is a similar style to my animation.

Inspiration For Bob-Reasons

My inspiration for Bob simply came from a picture I found on the internet which is talked about previously. I decided to make his pants black and his shirt green because I like the contrast in these two colours. I didn't experiment with any other combinations because I was happy with the first outcome and I would rather actually create my animation than play around with different colour options because I believe it is time better spend. I made his hair red because I wanted it to stand out and I have many friends and family with red hair such as my dad.

Inspiration For Piffle

My inspiration for Piffle, as funny as it sounds, came from neopets. About five years ago I loved the neopets game website and created a pet which I wanted my creature to look like. Once I thought about it I decided I wanted to draw it free hand and I realised I lacked the talent to draw the neopet creature. I just decided to draw a small, cute looking thing and thats what I did. I decided to make him pink because I think pin is a colour which represented what I wanted him to be like and is a colour which is ososiated with small, cute animals. This is a picture of what I originally wanted him to look like.

I decide to call the species the 'puffle', as weird as it may seem, because it was just a name which came to me one day many years ago and I have been calling any animals made up by me this for a long time. I called the individual creature 'Piffle' because it has a ring to it which I believe suits the animal.

Character Profile: Piffle the Puffle

Piffle is a small pink puffle. Piffles don't have specific colours and turn the colour of whatever they eat. Piffles favourite food is pink fairy floss and strawberry milkshakes which is why he is pink.

He is extremely cute and whenever someone see's him they instantly want to give him a hug. His favourite pass time is getting hugs from people.

He is generally a happy young fellow but he has an extremely short temper and can switch moods in a second as shown when Bob accidently steps on his food and appologises, yet Piffle still gets so mad at Bob that he tries to eat him. He would eat him, but Bob runs away. PIffle isn't determind enough to chase after him, just hapy that Bob has left him in peace. Having said this, Piffle is easily pleased, happy once again when Bob leaves. He is somewhat pleased with himself when he manages to scare Bob away and is pleased with him achievement.

TASK
This term you will be exploring ideas in relation to storytelling via animation, creating characters and storylines for a client using Animationish or iStopMotion. Your client wants an idea of what you wish to produce before you proceed. Hence you will need to provide them with your character research, your characters personality profiles, a storyboard and finally the finished animation. You research, personality profiles and storyboard will be presented in your journal, your animation will be digitally submitted via Blackboard. Complete parts A, B and C below.

DESIGN BRIEF
You have been commissioned by the Pixur Group to produce a trailer for a new TV series of children’s animations. This new series is important for Pixur, and is aimed specifically at the 12 – 17 year old demographic.

As they are still in the writing development stage, your brief is quite large and unrestricted. They are looking for ideas of all types. They want characters that will appeal to the target audience. They also want characters with personality.

Your brief is to produce a 60 second animated trailer of your idea for the TV series. If time permits you may choose to also provide a longer version of your idea that may run for up to 3 minutes. The characters themselves do not have to be complicated drawings, simple line art can be very appealing, if the character is strong and the storyline is interesting.

PART A: In your journals complete the research component
• Research and collect examples of animated characters. Make sure you properly cite your collection using the correct bibliography format.
• Annotate your animated characters in your journal with your thoughts on design choices and evaluate what appeals to you and why, and what worked and what did not.
• Write a personality profile for your animated characters. What are they like? How is their personality conveyed?
• Using the inquiry design process, in sketches, jottings, musings, thoughts, ideas, brainstorming, and anything else you can think of, begin to form your animated story.
• Storyboard your trailer, showing key scenes and shot angles. See the notes and websites on Blackboard as a guide to help you get started.

PART B: Show Development of Animation Skills

You will be doing a series of exercises in class using Animationish and iStopMotion.
This will help you develop the skills needed to produce your animated trailer.

You need to demonstrate use of the following features in your journal using class exercises and / or your final animation.

• Sound is optional in this task, but a good original soundtrack would enhance your animated trailer.

Research / Journal Hints:

• Organise your research under headings
• If in doubt about whether or not to include it, include it in your journal
• Use the tool sheets to help you stay organised
• Include rough sketches, collages and notes to brainstorm your ideas
• Make sure you reference all your sources according to the Student Diary
• Keep copies of all your animations
o Save them each lesson with a different number so you can show progress. eg: “Animation1”, then next lesson, “Animation2” etc
o Share these as QuickTime Movies, then load them to your blog so that your creative development can be seen.

• Don’t forget to talk about your choices and reasons for choices ie problem solve
• Don’t be isolated in class, look at what others are doing – this doesn’t mean you copy them, rather you seek inspiration from those around you
• Don’t ever forget – creating is sometimes hard work, but it is always enjoyable!

Through my journey with Bob, I came accross, a problem, when I was in animationish I accidently deleted a section of background and behind his eyes. I wasn't sure how to fix this, but with Mr Powells help I figured out how to work through the problem. I deleted the blank area and used the paint bucket tool to colour the inside of the eyes white.

Chosing My Ideas:

I had narrowed my opinions down to two, and I was either going to do the monster/bob idea, or have an object morph into many other things, a series of random, yet entertining things. In the end, I chose my frst idea beause I thought the story was stronger and I thought it would be more effective and I will be able to have characters and personalities.

Character Personality - Bob

Bob is the main character in my animation. Bob is a happy young fellow. He is a manger of the local zoo which is home to many species of animal which Bob cares for. As a result, he loves all animals, particularly cute, cuddly piffles, which is one of the reasons he wants to win the competition so desperately. He is extremely nice and overly friendly, he is friends with everyone who lives in his small town. He isn’t very good at anything and is ecstatic when he wins the competition because he doesn’t often win things. Bob isn’t much of a ladies man. He is very into health foods and loves to eat almonds, cashews and raspberries. Bob has a slight limp which he acquired when he was fifteen years old, rescuing a baby from a burning car. His heroic act saved the life of the bay but left him disabled. This shows how brave Bob really is. WHen it comes to the monster however, Bob is not brave at all and just runs away.

This is the storyboard of my animation. This is just a rough drawing about how my animation will flow and what happens. I have eleven boxes, and underneath each box is a short description of what happens and how. I am still not sure exactly how everything will flow, especially with the morphing of the monster, the transitions and introductions of new object but I have a fair idea of how everything will go together.

Story:

This is what will happen in my animation:
The main character, Bob, sees a competition is running and is determined to enter and win. The prize is a young Puffle called Piffle which only motivates him to win. He wins the competition and is so excited he forgets about his prize. He is celebrating and steps on the tail of Piffle, big mistake! Piffle gets angry, so angry that he turns into a rampaging monster determined to chase down Bob and kill him. Bob is terrified and runs away from the monster. The monster causes destruction, ripping up houses and what not, but when the monster sucks up and eats a girl, bob has had enough. He grabs the nearest weapon, which happens to be a pitch fork, and hurtles it at the monster. The pitchfork punctures the monster, and not unlike a balloon, the monster bursts in a powerful explosion, releasing the girl trapped inside. The girl runs over to Bob and hugs him. Bob blushes like crazy and the girl is so grateful and thinks that Bob, is such a hero, that she decides to marry him.

Keyholes and Tweening

KEYHOLES:

This is an example of how to use the key holes to move an object. To use do this, I picked a pre drawn animation which lasted for three frames, but you can do it with any drawing, mine was a spaceship with simple movements. I just repeatedly pasted this animation so it went over thirty frames. I then added a key hole, to the first frame and the thirtieth frame. On the left hand side of he screen, is the 'tools'. You can use this to move the certain frames and the other frames are automatically adjusted t match it. It is an easy and effective way to move objects using animationish.

Key frames is a much faster and more effective way to move objects around. In stead of having to change a little bit on thirty slides, just duplicate 30 times, and two key holes and move the last image wher you want it to end up.

TWEENING:
Tweening is the name given to the slides in between the keyholes. It gives the illusion that thre object is moving along smoothly. It is more effective, for me at least, as I am not a very good drawer and it gives a much better finished effect.

What is a StoryBoard?
Storyboards are graphic organizers such as a series of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence, including website interactivity.
My StoryBoard
My storyboard will give me a step by step idea of what is going to happen. If I were to give my story board to a random person and asked them to turn it into an animation, and I did it as well, we would come out with a very similar product with only a few differences due to our different interpritations. My storyboard will make it much easier for me when I start to create my animation.

This is my first creative media blog. Today I learnt about how to use the keyhole functions and move things across the screen. Over the next few days, I want to finalize my ideas and get started on the assignment. I am looking forward to this because I have never done any form of animation before.
